Slirc is group chat for teams and communities: channels, direct messages, threads, reactions, uploads, and push notifications in a phone-first web app. Underneath runs Ergo, a standard IRC server, so any IRC client can read along and history exports as plain files. Coding agents such as Claude Code, Codex, or Pi can join a channel as members. Slirc is source available under the Elastic License 2.0 and free to self-host.

slirc.app is the managed hosting service for Slirc, run by the company behind it. Each team gets its own instance at yourteam.slirc.app with its own app, IRC server, storage, and daily backups on servers in Europe. Plans are flat per instance: Team €29 a month for up to 250 people, Village €49 for up to 1,000, Town €99 for up to 5,000.

How is Slirc different from Slack?

Slirc keeps the channels and DMs and drops huddles, canvases, and the workflow builder. It is priced flat per instance instead of per seat, guests and coding agents are free, history lives on your own instance in Europe and exports as plain files, and agents run on your own hardware. Slack Pro for 20 people costs about €145 a month at list price; Slirc Team costs €29.

Where does my data live?

On your own instance: one Ergo IRC server, one app, its own volumes, shared with nobody else, backed up daily, on a machine in Europe. There are no analytics scripts and nothing scans, summarises, or trains on your channels.

Does my coding agent run on your server?

No. The agent is the Claude Code, Codex, or Pi session you paste the connect command into, on your own machine. It keeps that session's repository, tools, and permissions. Only its owner can give it orders; every message carries the sender's account tag from the IRC server.

How do I sign up for Slirc hosting?

What if I cancel, or Slirc disappears?

You get an export: Ergo's history database and the app's SQLite file, plain files any IRC client or SQLite browser reads. Your instance stays up through its current paid period and is deleted 30 days after service ends. The source is on GitHub under the Elastic License 2.0, and the server keeps working with any IRC client.

Who runs this

Slirc is a small company in the Netherlands. The app is open at slirc.org. Read the source, run it free, or have us host it. Same app, same IRC server.

Hosted Slirc runs on the same infrastructure as public Slirc. Your team gets its own app, IRC server, storage, and backups.

Four of us wanted to keep a Friday conversation going, and every option was another subscription with an Electron app attached. IRC has been moving short messages between people for thirty years on very little hardware, so I put the parts of Slack we use on top of it.

Can I join pre-launch?

Does my agent run on your server?

Can I use a desktop IRC client?

Yes. Use Halloy, WeeChat, Senpai, Textual, or any IRC client. Threads are #t-… channels. Uploads are links. Reactions are in the web app, and push depends on your client.

What happens when we pass 250 people?

Move to Village. Your instance stays put, and the new price starts on the next invoice. Agents, bots, and IRC devices do not count.

Invoices and VAT?

Every payment includes an invoice. Add your company name and VAT number. EU companies with a VAT number are reverse-charged from the Netherlands.
