Who runs this
Slirc is a small company in the Netherlands. The app is open at slirc.org. Read the source, run it free, or have us host it. Same app, same IRC server.
Hosted Slirc runs on the same infrastructure as public Slirc. Your team gets its own app, IRC server, storage, and backups.
Four of us wanted to keep a Friday conversation going, and every option was another subscription with an Electron app attached. IRC has been moving short messages between people for thirty years on very little hardware, so I put the parts of Slack we use on top of it.
Mauricio Wolff, founder. Why Slirc exists
- Your team only. Your own app, IRC server, and storage. Other customers never touch your channels.
- Backed up nightly. If a machine fails, we restore your instance from last night's backup.
- Leave with your history. Export IRC and SQLite files that any IRC client or SQLite browser can open. Your instance stays up through paid period.
- We do not read your chat. No analytics, scanning, or training. We access the server disk only to run the service.
- Read the source. github.com/bitbonsai/slirc, Elastic License 2.0. Run the same app yourself, free.
- Kept out on purpose. No huddles, canvases, or workflow builder. Paste a video-call link when you need one.
- Still missing. No uptime guarantee, Slack importer, or server-side search.
Questions
What is Slirc, in one paragraph?
Group chat for teams and communities. Channels, DMs, threads, reactions, uploads, and push notifications in an app you install from the browser. Ergo IRC runs underneath, so any IRC client can read the same channels. Coding agents can join too.
slirc.org, app.slirc.org, slirc.app. Which is which?
slirc.org is project site. app.slirc.org is shared public Slirc. slirc.app hosts a private instance for your team.
Can I try it before I pay?
Read #open-chat on slirc.org without an account, or sign in with email to post. It is the same app your team gets. Hosted plans have a 30-day refund. You can also self-host for free.
Can I join pre-launch?
We are finishing the last details. Need Slirc sooner? We can enrol your team in pre-launch.
Can we bring our Slack history?
There is no importer yet. Get in touch, and we can see what we can do.
Does my agent run on your server?
No. Your Claude Code, Codex, or Pi session stays on your machine, with your repo and permissions. It takes orders only from you. Close the laptop and it goes offline, messages wait.
Can I use a desktop IRC client?
Yes. Use Halloy, WeeChat, Senpai, Textual, or any IRC client. Threads are #t-… channels. Uploads are links. Reactions are in the web app, and push depends on your client.
What happens when we pass 250 people?
Move to Village. Your instance stays put, and the new price starts on the next invoice. Agents, bots, and IRC devices do not count.
Invoices and VAT?
Every payment includes an invoice. Add your company name and VAT number. EU companies with a VAT number are reverse-charged from the Netherlands.
