# slirc.app: Slirc, hosted for your team

> Team chat on a server of your own. Slirc is the part of Slack your team uses (channels, DMs, threads, your coding agent in the room) on a phone-first app with IRC underneath. slirc.app runs one instance per team at yourteam.slirc.app, in Europe, from €29 a month, flat. Guests and coding agents never count.

## What is Slirc?

Slirc is group chat built on IRC. On your phone or laptop it looks like Slack: channels, direct messages, threads, reactions, photos, link previews, push notifications. Underneath, every channel is an IRC channel on Ergo, a standard IRC server, so the conversation stays readable from Halloy, WeeChat, or any client, and your history is a plain file. Coding agents (Claude Code, Codex, Pi) join like colleagues.

- Installs from the browser as a PWA, push notifications on iPhone and Android.
- Invite by email. A new device signs in with one link and stays signed in. No passwords.
- Two containers, about 20 MB of RAM idle. Source available under the Elastic License 2.0, free to self-host: https://docs.slirc.org/setup
- Project site and live demo: https://slirc.org. Shared public Slirc: https://app.slirc.org/open-chat

## What slirc.app adds

Managed hosting by Slirc's author. Each team gets its own instance: its own Slirc app (pinned release of https://github.com/bitbonsai/slirc), its own Ergo IRC server, its own volumes, daily backups, on ARM servers in the EU. One flat invoice per instance.

## Who it is for

- Small software teams (4 to 50 people) with a growing Slack bill and coding agents they want in the channel.
- Open source projects and meetups that want a home that is not Discord, up to 1,000 members.
- Friend groups and alumni keeping a conversation going.
- Not for teams that live in huddles, canvases, and the Slack app directory, or that need SSO and a signed SLA today.

## Slirc vs Slack (20 people, monthly, September 2026)

| | Slack Pro | Slirc Team on slirc.app |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Price | about €145 a month, yearly billing, list price | €29 a month, flat, up to 250 members |
| Growth | grows with every hire | same at 20 or 200 |
| Guests, contractors, agents | count as seats | free |
| Joining | every member needs a Slack account | invite by email, sign in by link |
| History | on Slack's servers | on your instance in Europe, exportable as plain files |
| AI | Slack AI on their servers, per seat | your agent on your hardware, one paste |
| Missing | nothing you can name | huddles, canvases, workflow builder, app directory, server-side search |

## Coding agents

A Slirc agent is the Claude Code, Codex, or Pi session already running on your computer. `bunx slirc-agent connect <code>` joins it to the channel. It runs where your code is, obeys only its owner (checked by the IRC account tag), and never counts as a member. Guide: https://docs.slirc.org/agents

1. Join the waiting list with email and team name. Confirmation with your place in line arrives right away.
2. We provision your instance by hand, in order, and email one sign-in link.
3. Invite your people by email. Paste one line into your coding session and the agent is in.
4. One flat invoice a month. Leave any time with your history as plain files.

## FAQ

**What is the difference between slirc.org, app.slirc.org, and slirc.app?** slirc.org is the project site. app.slirc.org is the shared public Slirc, free. slirc.app hosts a separate private instance for your team.

**Where does my data live?** On your own instance: one Ergo, one app, its own volumes, backed up daily, in Europe. The author operates the server and can reach the disk, like any host. No analytics, nothing scans or trains on your channels.

**Can I try it before paying?** Read #open-chat at https://app.slirc.org/open-chat without an account. Full refund in the first 30 days. Self-hosting is free.

**Can we move from Slack?** No importer yet. Keep your Slack JSON export as an archive, recreate channels, invite by email.

**Does my agent run on your server?** No. It runs in your own coding session on your machine. Only you can give it orders.

**Can I use a desktop IRC client?** Yes. Every hosted instance accepts direct IRC clients. The web app has richer features.

**What if the server goes down?** One machine per instance, daily backups, restored to a fresh machine. No formal uptime guarantee on Team yet.

**What if I cancel, or Slirc disappears?** You get Ergo's history database and the app's SQLite file. Your instance stays up through its paid period, then is deleted 30 days later. Source on GitHub under Elastic License 2.0.
